Before we dive deeper into the Google search operators, let’s first understand what the search operator is?

Search operator is just a character or a set of characters which forms a command to narrow down or you can say target the exact data in the search engine query to make your search focused, easy, more useful and interesting. We will discuss here as what benefits google command renders, how these google search operator work and the techniques of using these with the examples.

Finding Duplicate Content

Duplicate content is a big source of website sudden drop in traffic so you have to be watchful.

Make use of Quotes (” “)

After the word Quotes, in the inverted commas put the content you want to check

For Example, during the search process a need aroused where you want to see the results for some specific phrase or want to focus on a particular phrase.

  • Just copy the phrase you want to check and paste it in the google web search query and put quotes around it and click to search. I just did it “You just have to keep it fresh with the relevant content crafted in your spare time” and the results are:-

Here the point to be noticed is that Google just showed one exact result but if you want that it is scrubbed or duplicated and google has ignored, just repeat the search and Google will give you all the related scrubbed phrases.

Want to be Specific

Make Use of ; Minus (— )

When your query has more than one meanings i.e; The animal, not some other thing as you will notice that there are many things on the name of birds like Eagle, Falcon, kite etc. Let’s search for falcons. Just see following results have surfaced:-

See the Result with Falcons-Birds

With the birds several other results of various teams have also surfaced, but we want to exclude these and want to see just “Falcons”.

Just type in the query “Falcons-Birds” and we can see the results only for the falcons.

Interested in Competitor’s site

Make use of; Site:

Most of a time you will be required to check the competitor’s site, or to check your own site index pages. Let’s say I want to check:

Site:contentwriting.blog

pic-3

You can see the resources indexed as 21, not a good number but as the site is young so still in making and adding the resources. The good thing is that all pages are indexed and the home page is next to google promotion page.

Not sure What to Put in

Make use of; Asterisk (*)

You are not sure what words should come in a particular query, just add an asterisk (*) and the ideas will flow in. Here google will give you anything as replacement. Now just go through the results and makeup your mind as what word to put as exact keyword of your choice.

For example, “Top10 * marketing services in UK”

Just see below that google filled the place of (*) at its own and now you can further narrow down and focus your search.

Searching Keywords in URL

Make use of; InURL:

You want to find a specific word in the URL, just add “inurl” before that word. That may be your keyword or your competitor’s keyword or some other phrase to search in a particular URL.

For example; you think that your competitor is hiding his rules and polices, to avoid people not get to know his business model.

Just find his site by using the search operator “Site:” and add “inurl” policy guide lines etc.   Site:contentmarketinginstitute.com inurl:policy

And the page is explaining the policy guidelines.

Searching Keywords in Title

For SEO Keyword in title has lot of significance.

Make use of; Intitle:

To check whether your keyword exists in the title or not, particularly if you want to publish some blog on some website and want that your title must be unique.

For example you want to publish your blog on the website contentmarketinginstitute.com and want that your blog must have a unique title which is not covered by them. Just use this operator and see the results below:

Site:contentmarketinginstitute.com Intitle:content seo

Searching from specific country

Make use od; Inurl:.extension

If you are interested to see results from some specific country, just add country extension you are interested in.

Guessing while Searching

Make use of; OR

Some time you are guessing as which keyword will be most appropriate and will give results. Just for example;    Content writing OR SEO

You will notice in the below screen shot that content writing is giving better results. So the decision making is easy. Although on the top is SEO content, again it is content,

You can make the multiple guesses at once from the URLs like;

“site:contentmarketinginstitute.com inurl:SEO OR inurl:content SEO Or inurl: content writing

pic-8a                                   pic-8b

Now let us see you want to discover your brand mentions, just put any different names of your brand with misspellings or possible spellings by using the “OR” operator in between each. For example;

Contentwriting.blog OR content writing.com

Then use (-) sign to exclude different properties i.e,

“Contentwriting.blog OR “contentwriting.com” -site:contentwriting.com -site:facebook.com -site:pinterest.com

See the result that all mentioned as (-) are excluded from the result.
